Introduction
Over time unnecessary files accumulate, which can be removed with a disk cleaner.
Discussion
My first choice here is CCleaner, a product that started off as pretty basic but has continued to improve to the point where it is now very close to the best in its class regardless of price. It's very effective in freeing up disk space by removing unused and temporary files, cookies, Recycle bin entries, Windows hot-fix files, history and cache files in many applications such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari and hundreds of others. Note you can configure preferences for browser cookies that you want to keep during a clean (in case you don't want to delete them all), which is a convenient feature for many users.
You can define custom rules to include or exclude files, folders or registry keys from cleaning (Temp folders are a good candidate to include), You can wipe free (unused) space from the disk (including MFT data), and CCleaner supports secure deletion of data (1, 3, 7 to Guttman 35 passes).
There are options to extend CCleaner adding new programs for software that doesn't come with the base install. Some of these options are explained in the Documentation You can also remove options (programs) that you do not want to be cleaned from the list of available programs that can be cleaned. The options can include adding to or removed from the built in detections that come with the base CCleaner install. This flexibility I have not yet seen in any comparable file cleaning tool.
CCleaner has been around for many years, and over that time it has been more actively developed than any other file cleaner software. (It's not unusual to see a new release every 4 weeks). Piriform release new versions to support new software when it comes out (like new versions of the major browsers) and with features to support changes to the operating system - eg. When Windows 7 was released support for cleaning "Taskbar Jump Lists", and even using "Jump Lists" and Windows 7 style progress bars in their CCleaner.

Many other file cleaner products were developed for Win2000 or WinXP and haven't seen an update since. If you are running the latest OS, Browser or Office Suite etc - it is best to use software that was developed and tested with the latest software that you are using.
I would like to see a tutorial or wizard for first time users when they run CCleaner. Too often the complaints that CCleaner deleted something it shouldn't, turn out to be the user isn't too familiar with what the options mean or what the impact of cleaning temp files and settings from their system. Even selecting every possibly option should still not damage windows in any way - as CCleaner is very conservative in what it will remove, but for some first time users, running CCleaner can seem to be a scary step to take.
However, if simply freeing up disk space is your objective then CCleaner is hard to beat.
A good companion to CCleaner is Empty Temp Folders. It's not as complete a product as CCleaner and it's been a while since it was last updated, but I find that it always manages to clean more temporary files than CCleaner. That's why I suggest you use both.
Another cleaner with a solid following is Steven Gould's CleanUP!. It's compact, well designed and very well maintained and is a real alternative to CCleaner. In use I've had a couple instances which caused problems on my test PC, but this may have been specific to my setup. Certainly the feedback I get from users has been uniformly excellent.
In a related category is PC Decrapifier. Its job is to remove unwanted trial versions of programs and services that come preinstalled on new PCs. You can remove all this stuff manually, but PC Decrapifier does this automatically. It can't remove every bit of junk from every computer, but the list of products it will remove is quite impressive.

Fragmentation: why it happens
Suppose you are browsing the web, downloading your favorite songs and installing an application all at the same time, how does your system write all these files without any interruption to your activity? Well it's simple: it responds to all applications' write requests (I/O operations) by writing all files at a continuous location on your disk.

The purpose of disk defragmenters is to reorganize such files which are supposed to be together. An ideal situation after defragmentation would look like this:

But what happens when you uninstall, delete, or simply clean your temporary files? Imagine yourself uninstalling the application (game) you installed. The disk could look like this:

The white zone is empty space without fragmentation. A disk looking like this will have just a little or even imperceptible impact on performance. In this case defragmentation is needed but not critical.
The last thing you want to see is a hybrid combination. Files very fragmented fig 1 and empty disk space fig3 but instead of contiguous clean sectors you'll find what we call fragmented empty space. And this is what it looks like:

This is the worst case scenario. Overall system performance will be compromised and fragmentation is critical. You should defragment (defrag) or let your defragmenter schedule and execute the defrag process for you.
Standard mechanical HDDs (hard disk drives) will benefit from defragmentation and continuous disk use, because when spinning it keeps remagnetizing the HDD plates. But if you own an SSD (solid state drive) you SHOULD NOT defrag or install any defragmenter application because it will shorten the life of the drive.
So when testing defragmenter software we are going to evaluate it with some parameters:
Speed of analysis on fragmented files: Isn't it speed we want from our computer?
Speed of defrag
Some extras: such as scheduled defrag, shutdown PC when done, etc.
Defrag capabilities: why is this placed in last position? Because almost all of today’s defragmenters can perform this task with very similar results.

MyDefragMyDefrag, JK defrag with a GUI (Graphical User Interface). Bad? No, just awesome!
Unbelievable power user options for everyone without having to configure any script. Just select the option that best suits your needs and it's done. MyDefrag employs an algorithm that places the most used files at the beginning of the disk. This decreases access times because the actuator arm of the hard drive has no need to move to the end of a disk to search a file.

The trick revealed and a little science.
When you turn off your computer (or Windows shut downs your HDD), the actuator arm has a designated "landing zone" (a specific sector at the beginning of the disk) that remains stationary until the next startup. This is to avoid disk scratch and therefore, data loss (data is read via magnetism, touching surfaces is not required). When turned back on, the closest sector to the actuator arm is already near the "landing zone" (beginning of the disk) so it's faster to read files on that sector than others in outer zones of the disk.
Also, the surface distance travelled is considerably less in the inner sectors of the disk. So, placing files at the beginning of the disk is the best idea.
MyDefrag is not the only defragmenter capable of doing this, as many others include an option. However, MyDefrag achieves this in a much simpler way. This is combined with a good “fast defrag”; the choice of specific options, many others by scripting, and excellent defragmentation methods and simple scheduler options.
This little boy, DiskTune, is not exactly a kid. Despite the use of Windows API to do defragmentation jobs, it's incredibly fast, simple and lightweight. Many useful options just a couple pixels of distance. Direct access to usual options such as Analyze, Defrag (quick), Optimize (rearrange) and Compact (defrag free space). The best thing about DiskTune? The ability to create a shortcut to your desktop and then double-clicking it to run a fully customized defrag. Four words—“one size fits all”.
Defraggler thumbnailPiriform's Defraggler—The first thing that caught my attention when first opening Defraggler was a green word, GOOD. I quickly realized it was telling me about S.M.A.R.T. Status (information provided by the disk itself, reporting temperature etc). This is a great feature and has its own tab on the program for detailed view.
In terms of defragmentation ability, Defraggler is one of the best choices you could make. It performs a very fast “quick defragmentation” with decent file reorganization but if you perform a complete defrag process, which takes longer, you obtain results that are worthwhile. Your files will be together as they should be as solid as a concrete wall. Defraggler also supports scheduling, low priority and boot defrag. Highly recommended.
MyDefragmenterMyDefragmenter, Ultradefrag with a very simple, intuitive GUI plus a full scheduler which has the ability to program defrag while shutting down or starting up computer. Includes a 24/7 support by phone call and online help.
Auslogics Disk Defrag thumbnailAuslogics Disk Defrag is another quality disk defragmentation program. During a fresh installation the installer asked if I wanted to install a Tool Bar and/or change my home page. These were easily de-selected before the installation process began. Auslogics Disk Defrag can be ran from a easy to understand GUI (Graphical User Interface) or you can use the command line tool for more advanced users. Auslogics also optimizes defragmented files and space by defragmenting free space and moving system files to the fastest part of the disk. The software is designed to defrag multi-terabyte volumes. If you choose you can defragment a particular folder or a single file by selecting the file out of a list of fragmented files. The program is set-up for automated defragmentation and will allow you to analyze your disks before you defragment. Auslogics also has a portable version available which can be run directly from your USB drive. Both versions are free and are allow for home or commercial use. The developers also have several articles regarding defragmenting your hard drive including How to defrag your drives the right way: 7 defrag tricks to learn today". This article includes topics such as temporary files and how to prevent the loss of your system restore points. The software only supports 64 bit on Windows 7/8 operating systems. The developers have updated this software twenty-four times in the last thirty four months, eleven of those were in 2012. Needless to say continued development of the product remains strong. I have used this program on all of my computers for the last couple of years without any issues. Operating systems I have successfully operated on include XP 32bit; Windows 7 32 & 64bit.

Unless you enjoy dumping hundreds of dollars into devices that you have already purchased, you should seriously consider unlocking your iPhone 5 because it truly is the most cost-effective yet efficient way of exploring other service carriers with your existing model.
Why You Should Unlock iPhone 5
You deserve to have the freedom to take your iPhone 5 with you wherever you may go, even years after your service contract has ended. By keeping your phone locked, your service carrier knows that you will have no choice but to stay with them for the long haul whether you have an active service contract or not. This is primarily because of the fact that they do not expect you to be willing to pay the early termination fees associated with cancelling your service contract while it is active or go through the hassle of porting your number over, establishing new service with a new carrier and also have to purchase a brand new phone to go along with it. Once you have taken the steps to unlock iPhone 5, however, this power and overall sense of control will remain in your possession.
You will be able to decide exactly how long you want to continue using your existing carrier for your phone and easily take your iPhone 5 with you to the next carrier as soon as you finally decide to leave. After they have unlocked their iPhone 5, they will think that they now have the ability to jump ships and explore the plans provided by other carriers immediately even though they may still be attached to a lengthy service contract and not have to face any consequences by doing so. Do not become trapped by this misconception. You will still be responsible for upholding the terms and conditions of your existing service contract.
Therefore, if you decide to cancel your existing contract by using your newly unlocked iPhone 5 to jump ships and switch over to a different carrier, then you are going to be forced to pay the early termination fees that are associated with this decision. Below is an AdSense check I scanned from 2006. At the time, it was the largest check I had received in the three years I had been in the program.
I blurred out my address, account number and bank info for privacy reasons, of course.

This is one of my highest payments from AdSense, but I will be honest and say this is way above average for most people.
My earnings aren't typically this high anymore due to all the Google changes, but I still earn what most would consider a yearly salary from AdSense.
What is Google AdSense?
AdSense is a nice way to monetize your traffic, and very easy to implement. It's one of my top earners and has been since 2003. (See the video about my earnings further down.)
Google.com earns most of its revenue by allowing other website owners to advertise on their search results pages.
All this is managed through a program they call AdWords(pay per click marketing).
You see these ads displayed above the free/organic results and along the right side of the page on Google.com.
These are called Sponsored Results, and the advertisers are paying a certain amount of money per click for these ads.
It's an auction-based system that allows advertisers to compete for those spots. Whomever has the highest bid and most "quality" ad, gets the top spot and so forth.
Now you can earn a share of the revenue that Google earns from AdWords by displaying these same text or image ads on your site. When someone clicks, you earn roughly 68% of the click and Google gets the rest.
This program is called AdSense.
It's a great program that can help you drive additional income to your website -- especially if it's mostly content based.
So if you are one of those people that doesn't like the idea of paying for a site, this is an excellent way to earn your money back and then some.
Please make sure you read this entire article. AdSense is not a get-rich-quick scheme and it takes a lot of work to make money. Don't think that just because you join, you are guaranteed to make big money.

When I first wrote "The Top 25 Websites for Watching Free Movies" last year, I was immediately surprised how many people wanted to watch movies and TV shows online. At that time, there was no legal alternative for watching these videos online, so that list includes many "grey-area" websites.
But more than a year later, there have been hundreds of new places to download and stream full length videos that have popped up. Even though this website has only be around for a year...there's soo much to watch already. Even better...everything is free! (In exchange for about one minute of commercials). You'll be able to watch most of the NBC, ABC, and FOX TV shows on this site in high quality. They even have full length movies available too, but these tend to be on the older side.

Much like Hulu, Joost provides high quality video in exchange for a minute of your time. It can get very frustrating trying to navigate the website, but they've just recently scraped their downloadable client in lieu of direct streaming video. This website may seem like a poor man's version of Hulu, but in fact it came before Hulu. But their smaller collection of "valuable" video along with their confusing navigation means that Joost will be playing catchup with Hulu for quite some time.

Although Amazon on Demand isn't free, it's always nice to be able to download your favorite movies for future watching. Amazon on Demand has both popular movies and TV shows...including content from almost every cable and broadcast network.
If you don't want to download the movies, you can rent each video for a few dollars less. For each rental you have 24 hours to watch the movie before it disappears. | |

In addition to downloading popular movies, you can also sign up for plans that let you receive actual DVD's through the mail or in Blockbuster stores. I like the fact that I'm able to exchange my rentals in-store so I can get a new DVD right away...without waiting by my mailbox.

Cinemanow is nice alternative to Netflix or Blockbuster All Access. Here you'll be able to download or rent streaming movies instantly with just a couple clicks of your mouse. They have a very nice collection of both popular movies and indies. Also, the first dozen people that clickHERE, get an additional 30% off any purchase of a independent movie.

There's enough (kid friendly) cartoons on this website to keep you entertained for as long as you can handle. Although I was kind of sad not to find any of the Adult Swim content (especially Futurama or Family Guy) there are a bunch of great cartoons available that I remember from my childhood.

A really cool website that is still currently in public beta. It looks just like the TV Guide channel on your TV...except you can choose any program and play it on-demand instantly. There are some great syndicated TV shows playing 24 hours a day.
I found the minisode, TV classics, cartoon classics, national geographic, and discovery channels the most interesting. On those channels, I got to watch shows like; Popeye, MacGyver, Who's the Boss, among many others. | |
Although this might be the most specific video website on this list, it's definitely worth mentioning. There's 12 seasons worth of free streaming south park episodes available right now!
I really wish EVERY TV show did the same thing as the south park people do. It would really make it easier to enjoy all the shows out there. |
